SEVEN

Harper was silent as he and Ivy made their way to the camp. They would repack the travois and head back to their cave. He heard the grunt of the great cat in the far distance and shivered. His heart went out to the woman they’d found and the woman they hadn’t. He would liked to have buried the woman, but with a large cat in the area, it wasn’t wise nor was it safe. There was nothing they could do and he wasn’t willing to risk Ivy’s life for a gesture of kindness. Ahead, he noticed her body stiff and jerking. He knew that the woman’s death had shaken her badly as well. On several different levels.

First, the poor woman had been killed so soon into her journey. Second, both he and Ivy were very much aware of how lucky they had been. Waking up in this time could find you staring into the eyes of a hungry predator. They had been blissfully ignorant of that fact at first. Anything could have come along on their first night and killed them while they were incapacitated. Harper thought that might be a big reason as to why there were few time travelers in this time. Perhaps people being pushed back had been eaten over the years while they lay helpless and unconscious on the ground.

Third, they had missed their window of opportunity and it looked like they were a long way off. In seven years, they could try again, but would it be worth it? They had been here for seven years already and were living their life. He wondered what life would be like if they did get back in another seven years? Fourteen years would have passed. Would it even be worth it? A small, and it was a very small, part of him was glad that they had not found the opening. He knew it was selfish and the only reason he had hoped to get back was for her sake. He wanted her to find her daughters again and he ached for her, knowing of her devastation at the loss of the chance to see her girls. Harper was sure it was like reliving the past again, feeling the old sorrow and pain of loss.

They arrived back at their camp and quickly stowed the wolf pelt. He looked over at Ivy, she was pale and her eyes were large in her face.

“You okay?” he asked softly.

“Not really, I can’t help thinking about that poor woman and her friend. Also, we were really far off the mark, Harper. I think we were going in nearly the opposite direction.”

“Yeah, I kinda got that feeling. But we don’t know which direction those women had gone in or if they had walked in circles. I’m so sorry Ivy, I really am.” Harper pulled Ivy into his arms and hugged her and kissed the top of her head. Her arms wrapped around his waist and he felt tremors move through her body.
